Salkantay Hostel Treks Peru offers a flexible trekking experience in Cusco for travelers who want to explore the famous Salkantay route to Machu Picchu in a more independent way. The Salkantay Trek 4 days independent is designed for adventure travelers who prefer to hike without a full-time guide, while still having local support, family accommodations and key logistics organized along the route.
This independent trekking service is ideal for hikers who want more freedom during the walk but also want to feel safe at the end of each day. Along the route, local families will be waiting for you at the accommodations, where you can rest, enjoy meals, take hot showers and connect to free Wi-Fi where available.
How the Independent Salkantay Trek Works
From the moment you make your reservation, our team will provide clear instructions about the route, accommodations and daily walking information. During your Salkantay Trek 4 days independent, you will receive guidance on how to continue to the next accommodation each day, helping you follow the route with more confidence and organization.
This service is different from a traditional guided group tour because it gives travelers more autonomy. You can walk at your own pace, enjoy the landscapes with more flexibility and still have the peace of mind that your accommodation, meals and luggage transfer are arranged in advance.
Family Accommodations Along the Route
One of the main advantages of this tour is the use of local family accommodations along the Salkantay route. These accommodations allow travelers to connect more closely with local communities while supporting families who live and work near the trail.
At the end of each walking day, you will arrive at your accommodation, where your room will be waiting for you. This makes the experience more comfortable than carrying camping equipment or searching for accommodation on your own during the trek.
Luggage Transfer for a More Comfortable Trek
During the Salkantay Trek 4 days independent, it is not necessary to carry a large backpack every day. You only need to walk with a small daypack containing your personal items, water, snacks, rain protection and essentials for the day.
Your main suitcase or backpack will be transported by local staff and horses between the main points of the route: from Soraypampa to Chaullay, from Chaullay to Lucmabamba and from Lucmabamba to Hidroeléctrica. This luggage transfer service allows you to enjoy the hike with more comfort and less physical strain.
What Makes This Tour Different?
The Salkantay Trek 4 days independent is a good option for travelers who want a balance between freedom and support. You do not need to depend on a guide every step of the way, but you still have organized accommodations, route information, meals and luggage transfer.
Independent trekking experience from Cusco.
Family accommodations along the Salkantay route.
Hot showers available in selected accommodations.
Free Wi-Fi connection where available.
Daily route information to reach the next accommodation.
Luggage transfer between Soraypampa, Chaullay, Lucmabamba and Hidroeléctrica.
More comfort by walking only with a small daypack.
A flexible way to continue toward Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu.
Who Is This Tour Recommended For?
This independent Salkantay Trek is recommended for travelers with some hiking experience who feel comfortable walking mountain routes without a full-time guide. It is ideal for backpackers, couples, small groups and adventure travelers who want a more affordable and flexible way to experience the Salkantay route.
The route still requires good physical condition, altitude preparation and responsibility during the walking sections. Travelers should be ready for long hiking days, changing weather and high-altitude areas, especially near Salkantay Pass.
Recommendation
The Salkantay Trek 4 days independent is a practical and comfortable alternative for travelers who want to enjoy the Salkantay route with more freedom, without carrying heavy luggage and with local support at the end of each day.

An extraordinary and amazing stay
We had the most incredible experience with our stay here. After a long and arduous day on the salkantay trek, especially going over the pass, arriving at Salkantay Hostel Challuay was the highlight of our day. Manuel greeted us with open arms and a nice smile and brought us to our clean and beautiful rooms with HOT water in the showers and views overlooking the valley right out our window and balconies. The dinner was amazing and delicious, as was breakfast, with spreads of chicken, rice, vegetables and then homemade pancakes and omelettes in the morning. We got the best night of sleep and could not have asked for a better place to stay on the Salkantay trek.

Perfect balance of independence & support
We are so thankful to Manuel for a wonderful time on the Salkantay Trek! My husband and I did the 4d/ 3n “independent” trek, and it proved to be a perfect balance of independence and support. There are very few “independent” trek options where a hiker can get support with transportation, accommodations, meals, and bag transport, plus a local contact, without having to hike with a group. Salkantay Hostel Peru’s “independent trek” fills this niche perfectly. It’s a fantastic value for what is included. Having completed it, I would happily pay more for the support I received. The planner in me felt a little nervous that I didn’t have a full picture of all the logistics ahead of time, but in time I found that Manuel took care of everything along the way. He seems to have connections all over the sacred valley, and made sure we were taken care of each step of the trek. We were treated with such kindness by each of his contacts in Soraypampa, Lucmabamba, and Hidroelectrica. And when we met Manuel at the hostel in Chaullay, he was so accommodating and kind. He answered all our questions, treated us like special guests, and even arranged for additional transport of our bag when we informed him that we didn’t plan to ride the train from Hidroelectrica to Aguas Calientes. Manuel is well connected in the area, and truly has a servant’s heart, so he will make sure you are happy. His genuineness, attentiveness, hospitality, and generosity made all the difference. We highly value and recommend Manuel and Salkantay Hostel Peru!

Frequently Asked Questions About the Salkantay Trek 4 Days Independent from Cusco
Find answers to the most common questions about our trekking tours, accommodation in Cusco, Salkantay Trek, Machu Picchu and travel services in Peru.
What does the independent Salkantay Trek 4 days include?
−
The independent Salkantay Trek 4 days includes transport from Cusco to the trailhead, 3 nights accommodation at Salkantay Hostel stations along the route, all meals from lunch on Day 1 to breakfast on Day 4, luggage transport by horse, and detailed trail notes with GPS waypoints. No professional guide is included — this is a self-guided format designed for experienced trekkers.
Is the independent Salkantay Trek safe without a guide?
+
Yes, when properly prepared. The main trail is well-marked, and our hostels along the route are staffed with local teams who can assist in case of need. We recommend downloading offline maps, carrying a headlamp and a basic first aid kit, and informing our team of your daily progress. Travel insurance is strongly recommended.
Can I add a guide to the independent Salkantay Trek?
+
Yes. If you decide you prefer guided support after booking, contact our team and we will arrange a local guide for part or all of the route. The upgrade is subject to availability, especially in peak season (June–August).
How experienced do I need to be to do the independent Salkantay Trek?
+
The independent Salkantay Trek 4 days is recommended for travelers with previous multi-day hiking experience. You should be comfortable navigating trails independently, carrying a daypack for 6–8 hours per day, and making decisions on the route. Our team provides a full briefing, trail maps and GPS waypoints before departure.
Why is the independent Salkantay Trek cheaper than the guided version?
+
The price difference reflects the absence of a professional guide. The independent 4-day trek at $180 per person covers all logistics — transport, accommodation at our own hostels, meals and luggage support — but gives you the freedom to move at your own pace without a group or guide.
Do the hostels on the independent trek have WiFi and hot showers?
+
Yes. All Salkantay Hostel stations on the 4-day independent route — at Soraypampa, Chaullay and Lucmabamba — include private rooms, hot showers, WiFi and meals. These are owned and operated by our team, ensuring consistent quality along the entire route.
