Choquequirao Trek to Machu Picchu: Two Inca Wonders in One Journey

Choquequirao Trek to Machu Picchu is an extraordinary journey that connects two of the most impressive Inca sites in Peru. Choquequirao, often considered one of the last refuges of the Inca resistance, played an important role after Manco Inca and his followers left Cusco around 1535, seeking protection in the remote cities of the Vilcabamba region during the Spanish invasion. Located at approximately 3,033 meters above sea level, in the foothills of the snow-capped Salkantay Mountain and north of the Apurimac River Valley, Choquequirao offers a unique combination of history, mystery, and breathtaking Andean landscapes. This remote archaeological complex allows travelers to discover the legacy of the last Inca rulers while hiking through one of the most beautiful and diverse ecosystems in the Andes. This route is carefully designed for adventurers who want to experience Choquequirao and Machu Picchu in one trip. Along the way, you will cross dramatic valleys, cloud forests, high mountain trails, and traditional Andean areas surrounded by rich flora and fauna. The Choquequirao Trek to Machu Picchu is ideal for travelers looking for a challenging and meaningful trekking experience. It combines ancient Inca history, spectacular scenery, cultural immersion, and the unforgettable reward of reaching Machu Picchu after exploring one of Peru’s most remote hidden gems.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Choquequirao Trek and Machupicchu 8D / 7N

Find answers to the most common questions about our trekking tours, accommodation in Cusco, Salkantay Trek, Machu Picchu and travel services in Peru.

What is the Choquequirao Trek and Machu Picchu 8 days?

The Choquequirao Trek and Machu Picchu 8 days 7 nights is the most complete trekking expedition offered by Salkantay Hostel Treks. It connects two of the greatest Inca archaeological sites — the remote and rarely visited ruins of Choquequirao and the iconic Machu Picchu — in a single 8-day journey through Andean passes, cloud forest and jungle valleys. It is one of the most ambitious and rewarding multi-day treks available in Peru.

Why is the Choquequirao to Machu Picchu 8-day trek so exclusive?

+

Very few trekking agencies offer this route because it requires 8 days, excellent fitness and deep logistical knowledge of both the Choquequirao and Salkantay areas. Annual trekker numbers on this specific route are extremely low. Salkantay Hostel Treks is uniquely positioned to offer it because we own and operate the hostel at Chaullay — a key overnight stop on the route — giving us direct control over quality and logistics.

Where do we stay on the Choquequirao and Machu Picchu 8-day trek?

+

The 7 nights of accommodation cover the full route: Night 1 at Soraypampa — Salkantay Hostel (3,830 m), Night 2 at Chaullay — Salkantay Hostel (2,852 m), Night 3 at Maizal — community lodge, Nights 4 and 5 at Marampata — community lodge near Choquequirao, Night 6 at a lodge in the jungle valley section, Night 7 at a hotel in Aguas Calientes before Machu Picchu. All stops include meals.

Is the 8-day Choquequirao to Machu Picchu trek available as a private tour?

+

Yes. This expedition can be arranged as a fully private experience for couples, small groups or families who prefer a dedicated guide, flexible start dates and a personalized pace. Private bookings are especially recommended for this route given its length and complexity. Contact our team via WhatsApp for private group availability and pricing.

How physically demanding is the Choquequirao to Machu Picchu 8-day trek?

+

This expedition requires excellent physical condition. Over 8 days you will cross high-altitude passes above 4,600 meters, descend steep canyon trails into the Apurímac gorge, hike through cloud forest and jungle sections and climb back up to Machu Picchu. Daily hiking ranges from 6 to 9 hours. We recommend at least 3 days of acclimatization in Cusco, regular cardio training before the trip and previous multi-day trekking experience.

Does the 8-day trek include both Choquequirao and Machu Picchu entrance tickets?

+

Yes. Both entrance tickets are included in the tour price of $560 USD per person — the Choquequirao archaeological site ticket on Day 5 and the Machu Picchu entrance ticket with guided tour on Day 7. Return transport by train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo and bus to Cusco is also included on Day 8.

What wildlife can I see on the 8-day Choquequirao to Machu Picchu trek?

+

This route passes through some of the most biodiverse terrain in Peru. At Choquequirao you can observe Andean condors from the dedicated viewing area above the Apurímac canyon. The cloud forest sections are home to spectacled bears, dozens of hummingbird species and hundreds of wild orchid varieties. The jungle valleys approaching Aguas Calientes host colorful tropical birds and dense Amazonian vegetation.

How does the Choquequirao 8-day trek compare to the Inca Trail?

+

The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is 4 days and requires permits booked months in advance, with strict daily quotas limiting access. The Choquequirao to Machu Picchu 8-day trek requires no advance permit, visits two major Inca sites instead of one, covers far more diverse landscapes and is completed by far fewer trekkers each year. For experienced trekkers looking for the most complete Inca experience in Peru, this 8-day expedition is without equal.
