Frequently Asked Questions About the Salkantay Trek to Choquequirao 6D / 5N

Find answers to the most common questions about our trekking tours, accommodation in Cusco, Salkantay Trek, Machu Picchu and travel services in Peru.

What is the Salkantay Trek to Choquequirao?

The Salkantay Trek to Choquequirao is a 6-day guided trekking route from Cusco that combines the Salkantay high mountain pass with the remote Inca ruins of Choquequirao — often called the sister city of Machu Picchu. Unlike Machu Picchu, Choquequirao receives very few visitors, making this one of the most exclusive trekking experiences in Peru.

Is Choquequirao worth visiting compared to Machu Picchu?

+

Choquequirao is considered one of the most rewarding archaeological sites in Peru precisely because it receives very few visitors. The site is comparable in size to Machu Picchu but only about 30–40% has been excavated, giving it a raw and mysterious atmosphere. Travelers who have visited both often describe Choquequirao as the more authentic experience.

Does the Choquequirao Trek 6 days include the entrance ticket to the site?

+

Yes. The entrance ticket to the Choquequirao archaeological site is included in the tour price of $550 USD per person. The site is managed by Peru’s Ministry of Culture and requires a paid entrance for all visitors.

Can I see condors on the Choquequirao Trek?

+

Yes. The Choquequirao site has a dedicated condor observation area, and Andean condors are frequently spotted soaring above the Apurímac canyon. The route also passes through diverse ecosystems where you may encounter spectacled bears, hummingbirds and other native Andean wildlife.

How difficult is the Choquequirao Trek 6 days?

+

The Salkantay Trek to Choquequirao 6 days is rated moderate to challenging. The route crosses Salkantay Pass at 4,600 meters on Day 2 and includes steep descents into the Apurímac canyon on later days. Daily hiking averages 6–8 hours. Good physical condition and at least 2 days of acclimatization in Cusco are required.

Where do we sleep on the Salkantay Trek to Choquequirao?

+

The 6-day route includes 5 nights of accommodation: Night 1 at Soraypampa (Salkantay Hostel), Night 2 at Chaullay (Salkantay Hostel), Night 3 at Maizal community lodge, Nights 4 and 5 at Marampata community lodge near Choquequirao. All accommodations include meals, hot shower and WiFi where available.

How many people visit Choquequirao each year?

+

Choquequirao receives only a fraction of Machu Picchu’s visitors — typically a few thousand trekkers per year compared to over a million at Machu Picchu. No road access exists to the site, meaning the only way to visit is by a multi-day trek, which naturally limits visitor numbers and preserves the experience.
